General Anxiety Disorder 150x150 General Anxiety DisorderGeneral Anxiety Disorder – Do not make coping with anxiety more difficult than it really is. Almost everyone will have to deal with anxiety sometime in their life and millions of these people have been able to, very successfully, deal with or eliminate their anxiety attacks.

If you happen to be one of those people that struggle with anxiety attacks on a daily basis, help is just around the corner. There is a solution to dealing with or curing your attacks, but first you must know the symptoms that accompany these attacks

Look for signs of a sped up heart, dizziness, stomach aches, excessive sweating, pins and needles sensations and many more.

So what are some of the things that cause anxiety attacks to happen? I will tell you that in the majority of cases it is not hereditary. It is more related to your diet, basically the foods you eat, or the liquids you drink.

If you do suffer from General Anxiety Disorder you will need to cut back on your caffeine and sugar intake. I know you like your coffee to wake you up in the morning or keep you alert to study, but caffeine, sugar and even energy drinks have a tendency to stimulate your brain activity and may bring on your anxiety attacks.

Lack of sleep is another major contributor to anxiety so try and make sure to get your nightly 8 hours of good sleep.

When you have the understanding of the symptoms, coping with anxiety becomes just a little bit easier to cope with in your everyday life.

We have just looked at some of the symptoms, and knowing so, hopefully will make coping with anxiety just a little bit less difficult. But now we need to look at some of the techniques you can use if an anxiety attack does come on to you

General Anxiety Disorder

There are 3 techniques of many listed below not given in any specific order. Practice these on a daily basis and you will find you start having more control over your anxiety levels.

Can you Say Relaxation

One of the hardest things for a person with General Anxiety Disorder to do is relax, yet relaxation techniques are one of the most effective ways of coping with anxiety. Deep breathing exercises, meditation and muscle relaxing exercises are three of the more effective ways.

The more you are able to perform these techniques the quicker your body and mind will accept the relaxed state so when the anxiety starts to take over, you know how to return to that relaxed state.

Like anything you do, you cannot expect to do this just once or twice and expect it to work when needed. You must practice these techniques on a regular basis, possibly starting from 20 – 30 minutes a day.

Negative Thoughts Be Gone

Those people knowing to have General Anxiety Disorder take a very different view of their world (cognitive distortions is the medical term used), than those without the disorder giving them an altered sense of reality. Trying the deal with a person like this logically will not always work as they have put their own perspective twist on the situation.

So how can we deal with this kind of behavior?  There is a tendency for people with General Anxiety Disorder to look at situations happening to them as being fact. If we could change their thinking to believe that these so called facts are really just opinions of the reality and we all know that everybody has an opinion and that opinions are not always right.

So here is a few question to ask yourself; “Can I look at this situation in a different light, maybe a more positive way?” “Is what I am feeling the truth or does it just feel that way? Or “Is what I am feeling going to actually happen or am I just reacting to what I think might happen?”

Uncertainty Acceptance

How many things in our life are 100% a sure thing? Probably nothing (other than death and taxes), yet those with General Anxiety Disorder want that full assurance that everything will work, and knowing that not all things do they will think the worst possible outcome.

It is time to start turning this thinking around. Not all things work out perfectly but most things never work out as bad as you think they will. Uncertainty is a normal part of our thought process and learning to live with this feeling is the first step. This is not something that will happen overnight, it is something you must gradually add into your life.

When a situation arises you are not sure of try asking yourself these 2 questions; “Even though I am not sure what will happen can I still make a logical decision to the outcome, but leave an open mind to change my thoughts along the way?” Or “Can I still do this even though I am not 100% sure of the outcome?”

This will be hard at first as you still want to know the 100% outcome, but if you were to slowly work these ideas into your thought process it will get easier with time. And as you start and see the outcomes are not as bad as you thought they would be, the more you will venture into the unknown.
